I'm working on replacing the Ac compressor. To remove the compressor the water pump needs to be removed. Not an issue removing it...but does anyone see any issue re-using the one I take off? Replace the mechanical while I have it off? If so, stick to GM or aftermarket one? Upgrade to an electrical one? Opinions and or experience ya'll have been though...thanks.
1999 fixed roof coupe, the current engine/ water pump has 20k on it.
It's the original from GM on this engine. The engine was replaced under GM warranty by the previous owner..the engine has 20k on it, 80k on the car. No issues currently, just has to be removed for the AC job.

Re-use it. No worries.
Even though you could probably re-use the gaskets as well, I would go ahead a get a pair of new ones as they're not much money. No gasket sealer/silicone either; install dry and mind the torque values on the bolts.

The pumps last a long time. My original has 208K on the clock. The gaskets for your 99 are old school graphite and a mess to get off. When you replace them - get the newer style. Stamped steel with silicone o-ring embedded in it. Nice design change. I think that started in 2000?

Actually it's the '97s and '98s that had the old paper style gaskets. My '99 had the newer (current design) gaskets which are stamped aluminum. I agree, much better design.
Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure about replacing it while I had it off. I didn't want to be "cheap" only for the water pump to fail shortly after the Ac repair.
The electric water pump idea... I shot that down quickly after pricing the street version at almost $800
