Default Problems filling fuel tank!

Ever since new, I cannot fill the fuel tank at a decent speed. The gas pump keeps stopping unless I fill at less than 1/2 speed. I've tried many different pumps at different gas stations, and it happens with all of them. It takes forever to fill up. Does anyone else have this problem? What causes this and how can they fix it?

Seeing as no-one else replied, I hope this isn't too obvious, but have you tried not pushing the fuel nozzle right into the tank? Just back it out a half inch or so so that it reduces the back-pressure enough for the pump not to think your tank is full.

No problems whatsoever such as you describe. My only problem is that I love this car so much I find myself at the pump way too often!

No such problem ('99 coupe). Use a number of different pumps with different speeds and I don't pay attention to how far into the throat of the tank I shove the pump, it doesn't seem to mind.

I've never had that problem with my 98. However, I have discovered that I cannot fill the tanks completely if the car is not sitting level.

My guess would be there is an obstruction in your cars fill pipe. How it got there would be the obvious question.

I concur with one of the other replies.I would giess there is an obsrtruction in the gas filler pipe. You may want to take it to the agency to have the fuel system checked out.It is possible there has been a obstruction directly from the factory if you have had this problem since the car is new.I have a 99,and I have never had such a problem. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking that there may be some kind of venting system that wasn't working correctly, and the pressure builds up during fillup. I guess I have to take it to the dealer.

I've had this happen a couple of times...I just move over to another pump and then it seems to work fine. Sometimes it might just be an overly sensitive fuel nozzle that is giving a false signal to the pump to stop.

I may be wrong here, but it seems to me that the tank should vent the pressure through the charcoal cannister. If the line to the cannister or the cannister itself is plugged, then the pressure would have to vent back past the filler nozzle.

Good luck.

I would be willing to bet that if you only put the nozzle in 1/2 to 2/3 the way into the fill pipe you won't have any problem at all. The fuel nozzle curves down tooooo much which causes the gas to splash excessively against the inside walls of the fill pipe just at the nozzle output. If you back it out about 1/3 the way I bet your problem will disappear.

Let me know if this works for you!

My 2002 gives me the same filling trouble. I have tried adjusting the nozzle position as some have mentioned but it still seems hit & miss.
