My 99 is stuck in park. This has happened twice now where I cannot get the car out of gear into drive or reverse.
Why is this happening and what is the fix?
Sounds as though the shift lock solenoid is acting up on you.
I've heard if you let the car warm up for a short period of time will allow you to get the trans out of park. (Worked for a friend of mine & he applied the brake with pressure also)
Also heard if you apply the brake real hard, it will work too.
Also heard if you disconnect the solenoid , it will eliminate the problem.
To get to the solenoid to replace or disconnect, you must first remove a few things.
This is where the solenoid lives.
I unplugged the solenoid (in the console) and that took care of it. No problems, no bad side effects.
You have to remove the center console and raise up the plastic base of the shift boot. I was going to remove the solenoid but found simply unplugging it does the trick. Remove a single connector the the top rear of the solenoid and you are good to go.
