Default Tranny fluid (flush/filter change?)

My buddy who is an expert in all things mechanical (restored a $750 garage-find 69 Charger to $40k/$50k show car) was driving my Corvette and got a check engine light so he pulled the codes and got an 1870 on the tranny. We have been experiencing some rough shifts between 1st and 2nd gears. His suggestion was to change the ATF right away and see if that solves the problem before replacing the valve body.

I did a forum search and read about 30 threads about fluid changes. Thanks for everyone who posted.

My buddy said that changing tranny fluid will leave plenty of the fluid in the tranny and only a flush will remove all the old fluid and related material.

I never see any posts about flushing it nor do I see any posts about removing the pan and filter. My '97 was a daily driver until a couple months ago but it is now a once-a-week-driver and it has 115,000 miles on it. I want to just do what makes sense in the long run so I can put this issue on the back burner.

Also, does it make sense to replace the differential fluid at the same time?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, It is time for a fluid change in both units anyway. You can, and need to remove the pan to replace the filter in the transmission. The diff only needs the plug removed, drained, and refilled.

And a flush is needed to get the fluid out of the converter and any other areas that old fluid can sit. Im not sure how this is done, but a flush is a better route. I paid $175 for a fluid and filter change in both the tranny and diff. Pretty cheap if you go to a transmission specialist and not the stealership. Id just take it in.
