I see 2 Valeo part numbers; 13864 and 13721. Which one for a 2001 Z06? The car has an aftermarket alternator that needs replacement. I want to go back to OEM because there seems to be too many "one-size-fits-all" parts out there. Oh yeah...BTW: Bill Jacobs Chevy in Joliet, IL would NOT give me the part number because I'm not a shop, although they did tell me there are 2 numbers for my car.
FYI - The parts manual I have indicates pn 10248634 for an '01-'02 Y body with MN6/MN12 trans. The 6634 part is indicated for all '97-99 and '00 MN6. Don't mean to conflict with prior post, just posting what I see - information could be superceded.
Thanks much for your input guys, but this is what I've been running into. Since I no longer have the OEM alternator, I can't tell the P/N. If someone has a 2001 Z06, some input would be greatly appreciated. (Although I lean towards Picklesemier's parts manual).
This is what I come up with for your '01: http://parts.nalleygmc.com/showAssem...rimLevel=15135
You can use this site to look up your own parts, and BTW, find another dealer-a response that he won't give you the p/n because you're not a "shop" means he's a d$%k. If you're unsure, you need to take the last 8 digits of your VIN to a dealer who WANTS your business. With the last 8, the parts guy can inquiry exactly what was/should be on your car. The last 8 actually cross references to the car's original build specifications which are archived in GM's database. Good luck.
BTW-the site I referenced is the SAME data base that the dealer has. Only downside is that you can't enter a VIN number to further refine your search. FWIW.
MANY dealers employ a system commonly known as "bumped list". IE their parts data base adds 10-15% to GM list price. Then if you ask for a discount, they can still bring it down to "full boat" and make a generous profit margin. You need to check online to find what a part REALLY costs before accepting the dealer's price. I've been at this for many years, and this was originally instituted by MB/BMW where they figured the customer was either too wealthy or too stupid to care. Be careful out there.
I worked in Quality Management for several automotive suppliers in my career. I can tell you that many OEM's mark up their original manufacturer's costs to them by as much as 8 to 10 times, and then add what I've heard referred to as the "Corvette Tax". Hence, the $425 alternator.
FYI, AC Delco carries a line of alternators that are remanufactured from OEM cores. Yours is listed at Rockauto.com for $146.79 with your core. See below.
ACDELCO Part # 3341280
{#19134273} Remanufactured; 110 Amp
GENERATOR CONVERTIBLE; w/6-SPD M/TRANS(MM6); VALEO IF 110 AMPS
GENERATOR 2 DOORS; w/6-SPD M/TRANS(M12); VALEO IF 110 AMPS
GENERATOR 2 DOORS; w/6-SPD M/TRANS(MM6); VALEO IF 110 AMPS
a lot of times you'll see two alternators listed for the C5 because the auto trans version (since about 2000) has a unique pulley on it.
I've heard the alternator itself is the same; only the pulley is different (the auto trans pulley has a one-way clutch).
The use of the alternator clutch pulley began in 2001 on A4 equipped C5's.
It is a slip-cultch pulley designed to reduce the mechanical load of the alternator at idle, which was supposed to correct a low idle speed or stalling condition, when the electrical load is high, and the engine speed is low.
As you stated, the clutch pulley is the only difference between the two.
Agree with the above on manufacturer markup-Delco is much less and the same part. With BMWs, the Bosch part in a BMW box=$X, same part in a Bosch box=$1/2X. Same concept.
