I agree with Lionelhutz it is probably inside the torque tube. The sound can be different based on whether the driveshaft is being loaded thru the clutch from the engine or just being driven/rotated from the rear wheels while the transmission is in gear but the clutch is not engaged.
I don't know. I drove mine tonight on the turnpike and it seems louder than ever. As soon as I let off the throttle it goes away, the faster I go the more pronounced it gets. I just changed my rear end fluid yesterday and it didn't help at all. I am tempted to put my stock shifter back in just to see if it makes a difference.
I also have a loud whine in all gears. It sounds like what DIZZYSN has. My whine just started one week ago. I also have the same short throw shifter. I am also trying to find what it is that is makeing this [high pich whine.] Yesterday I put the stock shifter back in the car it did not help. It still makes the same sound. I do not track my car so I do not think this is conected to hard driving. I did have a new clutch kit put in at a chevy dealer about 4 months ago so I don't think it is the clutch or throwout bearing' If anyone should find a fix for this problem would you post it on this forum please. To me it sounds like it might be in the torque tube or drive line....Thanks Route 66
Did anyone ever figure out the culprit of this noise? I got my driveline out and trying to figure out what parts are bad. I need to get this thing back on the road ASAP.
Did you ever get Rick to listen to this? Rick, can you chime in? Is this noise trans or diff? When I let off the gas or go to neutral or push the clutch in, the noise goes away.

I just installed a diff brace and had a real bad wheel hop while testing a launch, and the next day driving at 55mph I hear the same whining from the back of the car but it's a faint quiet whine...for now...so I either messed somethin up while hopping or the new brace moved the trans height making a bearing whine???

Sounds like something in the diff got messed up. Mine is a noticeable whine in all gears, at all speeds.
How did you adjust it? U normally set them loose till the bolts drop in . Tighten the bolt down then preload 1/4 turn and lock the jam nuts . Try that should solve the whine issue . Any questions please call me I'll explain to all to help you guys out . 610 931-7384 I'm tom at evil performance

Adjust what? And yea mine isn't through all gears it's only at 55-60 that it seems to be audible
Matt, work is blocking the videos...but don't you have an aftermarket headunit? Could also be the ground interference that goes with the RPMs.
Nah, it's definitely mechanical. Only happens when it's in gear. As soon as the trans is taken out of gear, even if the car is moving, the sound goes away. I'm pretty certain it's a bearing in the torque tube.
Hey guys, for the last year or so now I've been having a VERY annoying whine in my car while I drive, coming from right below the shifter. As soon as I engage a gear and start moving at about 1700-2000 RPMs I hear this whine and it just gets louder as I go higher in the RPM range. I do have an MGW short shifter but this noise appeared a year after that was put in.
I found that video online and it's the EXACT sound I have. No one replied back to the owner of that video on youtube. The five people who replied assumed it was the owners rear diff, however, I know that it is not. I've got a Rick Kim built stock diff that replaced my old broken one, an RPM Level 3 trans, MGW short shifter and an LS7 clutch. This noise appeared a year after the LS7 clutch, MGW and diff were installed, and happened before the transmission. The previous owner lied about a lot of things with my car and I found out he used to track it. Since the diff had gone I assumed the trans was about to bite the bullet and bought a new one. Trans apparently did need to be replaced, but for other reasons and the noise has not gone away.
Some questions asked in the Youtube video owners (McAllister513) thread on here with my answers:
1) Does it begin to make noise at around 50+MPH?
No, it happens as soon as I start moving at any speed.
2) Is the noise clearest under light acceleration while maintaining these speeds (50MPH)?
No, it gets faster as I go faster in the same gear. As in, if I'm in 2nd it'll get louder in the higher RPMs until I switch gears, then it will build up with that gear. It is most definitely RPM dependent.
2) Does it cease immediately when you take your foot off the gas but leave the clutch in?
No. When I let off the gas it will decrease in sync engine RPM. If I put the clutch in the noise drops down as the RPMs drop down. Blow 1700ish RPM the noise stops.
3)Does the noise stop when you depress the clutch and continue to cruise at highway speed?
Yes, but only because the engine RPM drops when the clutch is depressed.
3) Does the noise stop if you depress the clutch while cruising and depress the gas lightly, like you would do to hear the noise at its loudest, but with the clutch in?
No.
As of now nothing has blown up on the car, but i'd really like to get this solved. Any ideas guys?
I paid a very respectable shop to install a 3:90 gear diff in my Mallett vette..one year later..less than 2000 miles on diff. made the exact same noise..I went to extremes to find out what was wrong..decided to install original 3:42 diff. back in car..car runs like a champ..not even any noise..so don't rule out your differential just because some top notch shop built it..thats my two cents worth.

I ruled out the diff because I know what gear whine sounds like, and this is certainly not it. The symptoms of the sound, and the triggers tell me it's only when the transmission is in gear, even with the clutch in, and only when the car is in motion. As soon as it's out of gear, the sound goes away.
Since I was lead to believe by Race Proven Motorsports that it was the transmission, that was replaced. The sound is still there so that leaves the torque tube. I believed it was the torque tube from the beginning and wanted them to diagnose and confirm. I'm positive it's the bearing in the front of the tube.

I have this whine like the video too, and it only make noise when I apply the gas. I've noticed the whine being more pronounced on the interstate when going up a grade. sound goes away when I let off the gas.
