My !@#!@# external temp says like 24 degrees when it is 90+ outside. Therefore the A/C compressor will not come on. I thought that if you set the auto climate control to it lowest setting you could use a manual mode? I am dying here in the heat. Sometimes it moves up above 39 degrees then I can get the A/C on.

HI there,
I would suggest that your outside air temperature is not working correctly.
This is located on the passenger side, below the radiator, connected to the shroud.
I woud say that if you disconnected this, you should see a default of -40degrees. If this happens, I would suspect the sensor. If not, suspect the AC control head.

I had the same problem. When I went to replace the Ambient Air Temp Sensor the connector plug was corroded from water seepage. I had to splice a new connector plug into the wiring harness. Apparently this is a common C5 problem. Your Chevy dealer can order the sensor and the splice-in replacement connector.

gonbad-
I had this same problem. My dealer gave me the run-around at first, blaming this on an AC condenser that was choked off with debris (nominal charge for cleaning). When that didn't solve the problem, they next blamed the battery for leaking acid near the temperature sensor. After fixing this problem with a new battery and still no luck with the auto climate control, they finally replaced the sensor and solved everything.
My advice - have them check the sensor first and replace it. You'll save some headache and several trips.

I replaced mine and it still didnt work right, then I replaced the connector as it looked corroded, well it still dont work right. so...your saying if I take it out it will stay at 40 ? this is good as the AC will work, I really dont need to know what the outside temp is anyway
I just reread your post and you said-40 is the default wo sensor
:cry
Re: Crazy External Temp = A/C will not work! (gonbad)
I will check the price for a new sensor and connector from Ken and fix this myself.
My car is out of warranty and since then has never seen a dealer and never will.
That is exactly what I would do, but I would check the connection first. Also I think the a/c compressor should come on regardless of outside temp if the defrost is turned on you may be able to check that the a/c compressor still works that way.

Well I found the sensor at a local dealership. $9.82 so not bad. The sensor connector is like $27 go fiigure. I just replaced the sensor but the connector is corroded as well. It now reads about 67 and that allows the A/C to work. I will change the connector when I change my oil next month as that looks like a bit more of an involved process with the wire harness. I will put a small bead of silicone around the connector as well to help keep water out.
