Hi, I need some advice on installing a cam. This is a for a friend of mine that purchased my 2001 coupe. It currently has a thunder racing cheatr cam and he would like to replace it with something more even (it's a VERY peaky cam, tons of power up top but nothing down low). Here are the cars specs:
2001 coupe, MN6
Thunder racing cheater cam
Patriot stage 2 heads
Vararam intake/air bridge.
FAST intake (ported)
high flow injectors
Full exhaust (headers, pipes, catback, etc).

It has a bunch of other mods that aren't relevant as well . Any thoughts on a good cam to replace the cheatr cam with? He wants something that is driveable and idles well so nothing crazy. Smog is not an issue, he lives in Nevada.
It would help if you posted the specs for the "Cheater" cam.
Any cam with duration in the mid to upper 220's will be a good choice for streetable with a nice power band. If he has to pass a smog test then probably need to keep duration down to the lower 220s
Since smog is not an issue, he could go nice and low on the lsa. A streetable cam with good low end characteristics and a nice lobe sound would be in the high 220's duration, near .600"lift and 112* lsa.
Check out Texas speed's 228R cam. Its a very popular grind that retains good street manners, but will be better than cam cars that have to pass emissions.
Hi thanks for the info guys. The cheatr cams specs are (from memory) 216/233 .604/.604 117. I've heard of the 228r cam before, that may be a good choice!
I did the 228r cam. Definitely a street-able cam, and sounded great. Decent power curve too. I did wish I had just gone bigger though for what thats worth
Of course you do, I had the same problem with the cheatr cam, it was WAAY too small about two minutes after driving with it.. I'm going to recommend a larger cam to him if he thinks he can handle it.
But thats basically the same as the 228R cam with less duration... its about a 10whp weaker cam... You can choose whatever advance you want on the 228r's lsa as well. But even the 228r is weaker than what he's searching for... So I dont think he'd be happy with a 224 cam at all... Dont get me wrong, its a great cam and I will be going with the 224/228 cam for emissions purposes. But it doesn't really fit the OP's needs.
