Default K&N Intake install problem

I have a thread in the general discussion on this same topic. I thought that maybe I should start it over here also. I have contacted K&N about this also. The support staff was really good and helped, but there is nothing we could come up with to remedy the situation. Here is my problem. I have a 2000 Corvette and installing a K&N part 57-3020 FIPK gen II air filter system. I am having problems with the intake tube coming over the upper radiator cover. It comes over to high and not allowing the hood to close correctly. If I remove the upper radiator cover,it will close better but not the way it did before I started. I appreciate any information you may have or suggestions.

Thanks!

If you could send an underhood picture of the install, I could get a better idea. Anyway if you have a silicone connector from the intake to the throttle body, you may have to find a shorter one. Thats one possibility. The other is maybe youve got too much slack where everything comes together, (silicone couplings, each end, and the K&N Intake. And another could be that the silicone connectors arent pushed down enough on the ends of the intake. Removing the radiator hold down wont entirely solve the problem and it will look crappy everytime you raise your hood. K&N sells tons of these for Corvettes and you shouldnt be having any problem That said, once you do install it , it WILL wear on the hoodliner, but thats with most of them. If you could post some pics, I could get a better idea.Heres my setup with my old hoodliner installed. Hoodliner showed some wear particularly where the intake was placed.

Thanks for the info. I will get pictures up in a bit. Really appreciate the help. I have adjusted all couplings and I do ont have one between the intake and throttle body. Jim commented on the same thing you have said about selling so many of these. It's killing me right now, to not have this thing finished. Let me get these pictures goinbg and see what you think....

I had somewhat the same problem installing a carbon fiber intake tube and a dual cone intake. What I found was I had the carbon fiber intake tube pushed too far into the silicone connector toward the throttle body. When I loosened the clamp, and moved the intake tube further forward (less of it inside the silicone connector) , the intake body lay flatter and lower across the radiator cover, and hood closure was perfect. Good luck, sam

Thanks whisperinsam33, I was able to pull forward just a little. I got a couple of millimeters out of it. Anything I could get is awesome. I did remove the mounting bar that connects from the K&N filter to the to the pegs from the original filter mount. So, the clamps from the throttle body is what's currently holding it. I'm trying to get pictures on here. I think that should work. That created some room and flexibility.

Here is a pic. This is where I am, at this point. The hood will close. I bring it down gently, then push down each corner.

It looks pretty secure. Im noticing a large gap between the power duct and the radiator hold down. It could be seated slightly better. Maybe you should remove the intake, push down the silicone coupling more to the throttle body, then, reinstall the power duct pushing it into the duct as much as possible, making sure it seats better. IF you can close the hood now by pushing down on each corner, you want to make sure that the intake isnt sitting so high that its PRESSING DOWN on the intake when closed.

Yeah, that was my aim. But, I can't get it in there any farther. see, there is a little bit of a pitch there also. When I spoke to K&N yesterday, I asked if maybe they had another air bridge and he stated that they all would be the same. But, if I could get that back a little, that curvature could meet that indentation of the cover. That would take care of my concern.

Mike,
I see where you are, so far. From my vantage point, I would say that the coupler between your throttle body and that K&N power duct is about 2" too short. I have seen them advertised by some forum supporter outfits for about $30 -40 (I think some in YELLOW also). Not only will the increased length bring your power duct to a better position (directly over the indent in the radiator hold down), it will also allow more flex in final positioning.
Additionally, you ought to ask Darryl to back his camera up a bit and include a shot of his hoodliner - he has me convinced that his is the way to go. Good luck.

Hey guys! I hear ya. As far as the coupler, remove one of them and take it to Home Depot or Lowes to get a silicone coupler of the same diameter. As far as the hoodliner ill post a pic this afternoon. We got to get these babies ready for spring! Ha!

Heres a couple of pics. I got the hoodliner from Ebay. Send me a PM if youre interested in the company and the cost. Personally, I think its a BIG improvement over the stock hoodliner. And its a lot less $$$$!

Man, that hoodliner is cool. Would i gain, even a little, space with that one? I would hate to mess it up. I am still messin with my air tunnel a little. I have been takin everyone's suugestions and doing what i can. The performance gain was good, so that is a plus! This forum is awesome, with all the info. I will pm you for that information......Thanks!
