Transmission problem... first gear pops out occasionally...
Well, i just recently purchased my vette and i find that sometimes when i push it into 1st gear it doesn't go in all the way, but the shifter stops as if it had, and then when i begin to let the clutch out it pops out of gear pretty aggressively. This never happens when i'm actually in gear, just when i'm trying to engage first. I'm curious what you all think the problem is or if it's just me?! Usually when i push it in, it goes in smooth all the way, but others it stops short.... do u think an aftermarket shifter could fix this, or is there something wrong with the transmission, or is it just me?! Thanks.

If I recall, there was a post about first gear having three synchro's? Maybe you aren't engaging far enough?
A shifter might help, since the throw would be reduced.

My 99 FRC did this when it was new. I think its partly because every thing was new & stiff. Also I dont think I was pushing the clutch all the way in; I moved the seat up a notch or two and that helped alot (easier to get the clutch all the way in). I also changed to to Mobil 1 ATF in the transmission. I now have 15K miles on it and it never does it any more. I think its mostly getting used to the car. :cheers:

Thanks guys... i was looking into an aftermarket shifter anyways... the throw is too long for my tastes. What do you all recommend?

I have a ripper shifter and it still happens occasionally.

This has always happened to me occasionally, I've just learned to make sure to push hard going into first. Sometimes I have to let the clutch out to spin the trans, then try again.
You might want to try modifying the stock shifter. The shift distance is less, and the shifter height is nice and low. :smash:

At around a couple thousand miles mine popped out of 1st, 3rd, and 5th. The dealer fixed it and then the synchros went out a few thousand later. Since then, no problems except while getting used to the new Hurst.

Mine does that too. I think it's in, and when I let the clutch out it pops out with an awfully loud noise. Embarrasing as hell. Now I jam it good and hard into first every time.
