Default how much power for stock drivetrain?

hey guys,
wondering how far you can push the stock drive train before you need to start upgrading pieces? i have the basic bolt ons for my 99 frc (longtubes, catback, ls6 tpis modified 90mm intake manifold, halltech stinger) kicking around adding cam only or heads cam before i get it tuned and the weather breaks...i do not want to have to start replacing rear ends, trans etc. due to breakage. i do not race the car more of a cruiser.

so what is the breaking point?

as always thanks!

If you are not racing and don't use drag radials, then very little needs to change. If you a stick, then the clutch is the first weak point when you go heads/cam. An auto is worse as the transmissions tend to be flaky.

I have been running for years on a stock auto using a full head/cam package but I am probably just lucky. They just altered the tune to shift faster/firmer to help the longevity of the clutch packs.

Not sure what the roof is on the power but can provide some info. My C5 has had 420RWHP and around 445RWTQ for the last 10 years. I used to drag race it a lot on the stock run flats and the first thing to go was the stock clutch. That was the only component that failed from racing it. For the same reasons you cited, I avoided running on drag radials. My car easily has 150-200 passes down the drag strip. I haven't run it on the track or an autocross except once or twice in the last 7-8 years.

The last year or two the rear end has started to show it's age and abuse. I'm not sure if it's the bearings, rear end, or just a loud fuel pump. In any case I would still drive the car 200+ miles with minimal fear but plan to repack\replace the bearings if needed as well as the rear end components.

For a cruiser on stock tires that you don't abuse too much, I would wager a guess of 500-550hp.

Best of luck

All of these mods were installed between 2002-2003. Intake, exhaust, LG headers, LS6 valve springs, 100 dry shot nitrous. The car dynoed the same number +\- 2hp\tq in 2003 and again in 2010.

Nitrous was a cheap and quick bang for the buck. If I had it to do over again I would have done heads\cam and or forced induction. Chasing nitrous bottles down gets old quick.

GM sez 500hp is the limit the drive train was designed for.

I have been running 580 RWHP for a few years now(700 at the crank) with everything in the drive train stock. Cannot run drag tires unless I do drive line up grades. Even the wide fairly soft rear tires break loose easily so not a lot of wear and tear on the drive line.
