Default Fuel sender parts

Can anyone tell me if there's a difference between a 1999 and 2002 left and right tank sending unit? I have a 2002 and I got a friend is parting out his 1999 convertable. Are they interchangeable???

There are lots of different part numbers out there: pre-FFS, post-FFS, long arm and short arm. Some are interchangable, some are not...the only way to really tell is remove the one you have and compare. FWIW, I would not waste my time putting a used fuel sender in, if you are going to the trouble to drop the tanks, spend the $60-90 per side and put new ones in.

I would generally agree with you. Besides, as you said, the "sender" (NOT the entire assembly) is available new as a separate item for the driver's side. Passenger side not so much. On the passenger side you have to replace the assembly.

2002 coupe does not require me to drop the tanks. I'm not sure where you got the $60 to $90 per side. Cost for the right side sending unit that comes with the jet pump (complete assembly) is going for $300.00. Left side (Drivers side) $450.00. Not aware that these the sending unit is sold separte. Besides I believe my jet pump is not transferring fuel from the right side to the left. I'm getting a real good deal and I figure that if compatible, I can pull out one and install the replacement. Clean my original and reuse should the one fail. Just wanted to know if the electrical connection and operation was the same. Thanks for your input...

There are lot of parts and pieces down there. The "dealer" will want to sell the whole kit--lots of cash. if you can figure out what's broke, it is not too bad to buy the single part (if you can find it...) I replaced both senders for not so much, and got bent over for the fuel sock/strainer kit. Examples for the 2002 below. Good Luck!!

SENSOR,FUEL LVL LEFT HAND $103.79, STRAINER KIT,FUEL USED ON LH AND RH MODULES $67.79, However, if you want the transfer pumps prepare to pay $263-$393 [SPECTRA PREMIUM / COOLING DEPOT Includes Pump, Sender, Float, Strainer and Fuel Reservoir; Left Side $393] (all prices from Rock Auto)

Yes the electrical connection is the same, and the only electrical part in the right side is for the fuel level sender. Two wires.
The difference between early and late (leaving 03 and 04 out) is the later units went to a screen type pre-filter vs a sock and the shape of the "fuel hat" gasket is different. One is round and the other has a flat on one side but either will work.
Be very careful tightening the bolts; use a criss-cross pattern.
New AC Delco MU-1218 $235.47 @ autopartstomorrowdotcom and includes new gasket w/bolts. OEM part # is 89047748
