Is this one ok? It goes for $120 and is Snell M95, is that the same thing as Snell 95?
Snell is either "M" for motorcycle or "SA" which is a higher rating with fire resistent lining. If you have any notion of trying road track events in the future, you should go with an SA2000 rated helmet, since that is what is being required or will soon be required by many organizers (you can still get by with SA95 but not for too much longer).
I went with a Bell Mag4 open face helmet, SA2000. It cost me around $179 from http://www.racerwholesale.com on a closeout. They also carry other reasonably priced SA2000 helmets.
The cheapest is racerwholesale....some suggestions:
1. Don't buy a Snell 95 helmet...get a Snell 98 helmet at this point. Various sanctioning bodies will begin mandating '98 stickered helmets so the '95 will have a limited life
2. Be aware of the differences between and SA helmet and an M helmet. If you want to run in certain events you MUST have an SA helmet, while most sanctioning bodies don't care which. An M helmet is much more useful for various things...like riding a motorcycle, snowmobile, motorized skateboard, etc. SA helmets usually cost more because they are made in smaller numbers
3. I don't recommend Bell Motorsports as their return/exchange policy is really lousy. While most folks will accept a return/exchange as a normal business event these guys are real sticklers about charging a 15% penalty irrespective of the circumstances. Bottom line is that you are better off dealing with a company that doesn't impose these hidden costs
Another reason I suggested the Simpson brand is that they are made for custom order if you order them direct from Simpson.
Suggestion: Go to a local AutoX event and try on a couple of the sizes of helmets they have as loaners so you can decide which size fits you comfortably without any excess movement of the helmet on yor head. Then either order or buy one that has a build date that will be very new. This will insure the most recent Snell Rating and will give you the longest life with the most comfortable, protective fit for your own use..
Don't cheat yourself out of quality on a helmet. The watermelon (head) you save will be yours :D
Good luck
So I have been saving my old 95 motorcycle helmet for nothing? Well unless the wife lets me get another bike, but thats not likely to happen

There are no SA98 helmets - only SA95 and SA2000. It's the SA2000 you want.
4.3.1 Helmets
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on course. All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA, M, or K) are acceptable. For 2002 this includes Snell 2000, Snell 1995, or Snell 1990.
SCCA is very reasonable (in this regard). If you want to run in the Silver State Classic they are mandating only SA helmets and are going to require SA2000's next year. The other high speed events have similar requirements.
The point of all this is to buy a helmet that gives you maximum utility for your intended use (s)...
Go to your local motorcycle dealer. I go t a nice Bell 2000 for $95 on close out. Of course the $18,000 I spent on the new Harley for "just passing through" could make the helmet not such a bargain.
