C-5:

Is there a definitive test or procedure to determine if the infamous
piston slap is present? Or is it a "subjective" opinion of the particular
dealer/technician?

I have 9000 miles on my '01 coupe (A4) and really am getting tired
of the so-called "normal" rattling goin' on.
I mean, if I am persistent enough, will I eventually get a dealer who
will honestly investigate? The last dealer said," This is a can of worms
we might not want to open." Granted, there isn't an experienced tech
at the shop, but the service manager is aware. Is he just trying to
get me out of his hair?
What's the procedure to really find out, if there is one?

Thanks...GeorgeC

The piston slap is due to the "short skirt" piston design of the LS1 engine causing the piston to "rock" in the cylinder bore. This type of piston is used in many high performance applications.Due to expansion, the knock will tend to go away in a few minutes during warm up.GM claims that this is not a durability concern and a normal characteristic of the LS1.Based on their investigations, the piston slap causes no abnormal wear to the pistons or the cylinder walls.Since it is not a durability issue, they do not suggest at any attempt for the dealers to correct it.This is more than likely why your dealer mentioned opening a can of worms...

There is no test to confirm the noise, but it is a distinct noise to those that are aware of it.

In production around April-May of 2001,GM started phasing in coated pistons into the C-5 to help reduce the piston knock, again as a pleasability issue, not a duribility issue...
