My ac belt needs to be replaced and I was wondering if it can be changed from above or does the car have to up and done from below? I changed the big serpentine belt and put a new tensioner on but the ac belt looks tricky and I dont have a jack.
I am 99% sure it can be done from above as I just had one replaced at the dealer and I do not recall the car going up on a lift. Something was making all kinds of noise and they replaces the belt and some other stuff.
If you have an A4,the trans cooler lines are in the way of the tensioner and it is easier to get a wrench on the tensioner from below, with the wrench facing downward...If you have an M6,you can probably access the tensioner from above :yesnod:
Thanks for the info. I have a A4 trans so it looks like my best bet is to take and have it put on from below. Any idea what it might cost if I go to a shop. Or is it worth going out and buying a jack and stands?
It can easily be done from above. Take off the serpentine belt, and its tensioner. You have enough access to get a wrench (not a socket) down there. I did it on my 98 A4 several times.
