I am looking at building a 427 LS1/LS6/C5R engine. I was wondering what the best combo would be to get the most realiable and most powerful engine.
Option 1: use an LS1/LS6 block and bore it along with a stroke.
Option 2: use the C5R block that is already at 4.120" bore and use the stock 4" stroke.
I'm not sure which would be best. I'm leaning a little towards the C5R block b/c I would be able to rev it higher due to the shorter stroke. Thanks for any help/suggestions.
I didn't mean the raceing built C5R. You can buy the C5R block from Haltech and it can be built up like a LS1/Ls6 b/c it is just about the same thing, plus the block is only about $5800 if I remember correctly.
Brandon,
If you prefer to stick with the LS1/LS6 block it will need to be bored and resleeved in preps for the larger bore pistons as well as clearanced for the larger stroke crank. You are right that a C5R block, with its 4.120 bore, is ready to accept your large bore pistons... plus with the shorter stroke the bore/stroke ratio is more square. Katech builds great motors. Give Nate a call Monday and I'm sure you can discuss specifics with him. :)
I dont think that the stock block can be bored and stroked to 427 .... but I think 422 is possible ...
the safest way might be to get the 427 block ...
Actually you can punch a C5R block out to a 4.20 bore and using the lunati 4.25 stroker crank, would net you 471 cubic inches.
Some are now running 4.155 bores on LS1/LS6 blocks and using the 4.25 inch stroker crank would net you 461 cubic inches.
SW is running an all bore LS1/LS6 block at 4.155 bore with stock stroke netting 393 cubic inches.
Also if someone wanted to, they could get over 1000 HP NA using large cubes in a C5R block, a big cam, and C5R heads, which require a custom intake manifold. Of course sacrifice in streetability. Just takes money. :yesnod:
If you want to have over 500 RWHP in a reliable motor....go with the C5R block....I just bought one Team Chevrolet for $6100....Katech wanted $6800. The C5R block is much stronger and is designed for the stresses of racing....to start, I'm having it supercharged with 5-6 lbs of boost and expect over 650 RWHP. This setup could run 12-14 psi boost and get well over 800RWHP. Probably give the LPE TT 427 a run for the money. When my car is done I'll let you know what it dynos.
