Default 2000 Corvette - Hurst short throw shifter

I just purchased this Corvette and the previous owner at some point installed a Hurst short throw shifter. The shifter feels very tight and requires some effort to shift into all 6 gears and reverse.

Is this normal? Are there any adjustments or is there something going wrong?

Thanks, Rob

The centering springs can be adjusted on the Hurst shifter. Of course that only effects how hard it is to push the stick side to side when it's in neutral. The increased effort to push the stick forward and back is a result of the leverage you loose to make the throw shorter. The only thing you can do about that is get a taller shift **** to effectively lengthen the stick (and your throws) to restore some leverage.

To adjust the centering springs you remove the leather shift boot and on the top of the Hurst's base you'll see a set screw on each side of the stick. Unscrew those set screws and there's a spring underneath that pushes the stick back to center when it's in neutral. The shifter come with two set of springs, one softer and one harder and its possible to put both in at the same time for maximum stiffness. I believe you can also run it without the springs as the trans has internal springs which is what the factory setup relies on.

Thanks for your response. My shifter currently has the black ball hurst shifter ****. I just ordered a new c6 **** that is designed to fit the C5.

I have one as well. Search for the "Anti venom" mod, which is fairly simple to do and helps a lot. It involved removing a plug and fitting a copper washer. Love it now.

Anti-venom mod is almost a must for this shifter. It makes a BIG difference.

These shifters don't have any dust protection and can get "gritty" inside. Take it off and clean it and grease it. Then adjust the springs and tension to your pleasure.

As already mentioned, I would completely remove the centering springs since I don't think they're needed for our application. While you're at it, you should also make sure that your shifter box is aligned properly. Look up "shifter alignment" on this forum. There are several how-to posts.

I would keep the spring loading to 3rd and 4th... this makes it easier to make the 2nd to 3rd shift... all you have to do is push the shifter forward and it will automatically go to 3rd. No need to guide it..
I have the medium springs in mine, and it gets easier to shift the more you drive it...
