I got the "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" this past weekend. It happened while the car was in my garage.
I asked for advice on this forum and everyone was very helpful. Thanks.
I reviewed all the posts on the "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" issue - my experience may have revealed something new.
While the car was in my garage I tried the following (all unsuccessful)...
(1) Pull fuse # 25 (for 30 seconds)
(2) Disconnect battery (for 10 minutes)
(3) Quickly starting and shutting off the car
(4) Violent turning of the wheel with one hand while I rapidly cycling the ignition with the other - true rage
Finally, ready to give up, I decided to try one more technique.
I asked my wife to rapdily cycle the ignition while I used BOTH hands to firmly (but not violently) cycle the steering wheel. The wheel unlocked on the second wheel cycle with a gentle "pop".
I think the added leverage, using both hands, made the difference.
The lesson may be that two people are better than one for this situation. Something to keep in mind. At least it worked for me.
Re: UNLOCKING THE STEERING COLUMN ... WHAT I LEARNED (Doughan)
Question: Mine was locked about 2 years ago..went to the dealer and got it "fixed" The car has been fine for two years now without a problem. Just the other day out of the blue it does it again (service colum lock), i turn the ignition while turning the wheel and it unlocks and the message hasn't returned since. That was about 2 weeks ago. Now my question is...What are the odds that this is going to happen again? and What does the Dealer actually do that turning the key and moving the wheel won't do?

I ain't no bettin' man but, if I was, I'd bet agin you. :nonod:

They disassemble the assembly and replace several components. Problem is, many folks, such as yourself, continue to experience this wonderful phenomenon despite the "fix". That's why I purchased and installed the aftermarket bypass rather than have to join the CLC (Column Lock Club). :D Unfortunately, the bypas is incompatible if the GM fix has been applied. :cuss

Re: UNLOCKING THE STEERING COLUMN ... WHAT I LEARNED (Patches)
Paul @ COH has one that works even with the GM "fix". (his words, not mine) . I just ordered one for my '02 Roadster with only 5k miles...better to be safe than LOCKED! :smash: :smash:
Re: UNLOCKING THE STEERING COLUMN ... WHAT I LEARNED (OCMike)
This has probably already been adressed in another thread, but if GM did the "fix" and it locks again...what is my recourse? Don't they warrantee the "fix'? Has this happened to anyone else?

Yep just pull firmly to the right while you turn the key and it will pop out. Had to do this twice and it never happened again in the last year or so. The bypass is a waste of money in my opinion cause if it ever locks you just turn the wheel firmly to the right and it pops out, no big deal.
Re: UNLOCKING THE STEERING COLUMN ... WHAT I LEARNED (Len16)
Here's a starange twist to this. I purchased and installed the by-pass kit when I bought the car. I forgot all about it. I was going back through my dealer receipts as I noticed on my last oil change they had a new part number for the oil and I was concerned they may have used dino oil. Well lookie what I find. They noticed I didn't have the recall done and did it. They never mentioned it as I was out BS with the Service Manager and tech's (I really like my dealer) and they sent my on my way. My steering wheel still turns the wheels when the motor is off, so I have the CL By-Pass kit and the recall done to my car. Car seems fine with the by-pass and recall peacefully co-existing.

what did the dealer do to resolve the issue of Service Column Lock? The dealer did recall but just reprogrammed it and now we are getting Service Column Lock error and cant unlock. Have yet to try your method but tried everything else
Just happened to me and looking for same answer. Obviously dealer had only reprogrammed it instead of replacing lock to remove pin otherwise we wouldn’t be having this problem.

This worked for me today on my 99 FRC, I had tried everything else, car was stuck in the driveway after having to pull it out for work on our home. Happened once before two week back, pulled the fuse and it unlocked, not today. Must order the bypass, thanks. It almost slept outside lol.
