hey guys im new to c5's and ls engines, but i just purchased my first one, a 98 automatic. already got the horsepower fever and began purchasing my first wave of mods. bought me an slp ls6 intake manifold and vararam vr-b2 system. my question involves the manifold itself. i wanted to keep the ls1 coolant crossover tubes so i decided to grind the ribs on the bottom of the intake manifold. i cleared all the intruding 'waffle walls' in the way, and ground them smooth to the intake. it could honestly pass for a factory look. but my problem is the intake is STILL HITTING the coolant tube! i have read that some people just push the intake down and bolt it in but i dont want to deal with leaking coolant tubes later on, or a cracked manifold. anyone have any advice?
to me it looks as if the tube is hitting on the bottom front lip of the manifold though. not on a rib, but on an actual runner wall, right beside the throttle body opening. tapping it down would create enough room for a comfortable fit?
No they should be hitting the ribs under the intake. ls1howto.com has a write up on one fix or do what a lot of other people do and just shave all the ribs off. They dont do anything.
trying to make this as painless as possible and still keep my factory tubes in place....wat was supposed to be an hour job is turning into an all nighter lol
I had to do as Nuke suggested. Use a rubber mallet and beat it down flush. Then I marked the top of all the tubes with a grease pencil, dropped on the intake, and pushed / rocked. There was one spot still touching so I used a ball peen hammer and just barely put a slight flat into it.
Discard the two green wire clips if your car has them.
Why would you smash the tubes that carry water to parts of the engine when you can shave off useless plastic instead? If you dont want to do the cross over tubes shave off the ribs under the intake and press on.
"barely put a slight flat into it" does not equal smash! ~ 1/64" to 1/32 at most. If ribs are shaved and there still is contact, I rather do that than leave something that could wear.
Here's a nice write up with pics by someone who modded the ls1 coolant lines to work with a fast 90 intake, which leaves you with even less room than the ls6 intake. http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation...take-pics.html
I finally got it to sit flush. Took alot of grinding, pushing the coolant lines down against the valley cover, and removing the knock sensor wire clips. So frustrated but i have to say i am pleased with the results. And that vararam vr-b2.... no instructions can describe the pain involved putting that thing in.
Make sure the filter is sealed in the Vararam. If you stick the filter into the upper housing and there are air gaps between the filter and housing seal on the sides of the filter then it'll let dirt into the engine. I ripped the foam gasket out of the housing and used black RTV to make sure mine was sealed.
yea i believe the filter is not sealing properly. its a huge pain to take it out too because the maf and air bridge push up against the vararam filter box really tightly. i bought the k&n filter for it and it seems to have a fitment issue on the 4 corners. might have to trim it down a bit and add some silicone or foam weatherstripping to seal it properly.
