My 2000 M6 FRC on ocassion makes the dreaded bad ground 'click' when trying to start it, ie the key turned to the start position and click. All guages etc light up and function. When this occurs the DIC voltage reads like 11.7 volts with the key in the ON position. When I follow Bill's ignition switch test procedure the voltage to all of the fuses reads the same with the key in the start postiton (11.7). With the switch in the off position it reads 12.6 volts, this is via the DIC and a volt meter.
I have cleaned all of the under hood grounds and the battery connections are tight. I had the connection to the starter cleaned when I had it inspected last week. The battery reads 12 + volts when the key is off. The Altenator is working, I think ? When normal it reads
between 14.2 to 14.5 volts once again via the DIC and a volt meter. After the starter connection was cleaned it was fine for a week.
Today It did it again .. This time the voltage read 12.2 volts. I push started it and the volts on the DIC after it started stayed below 14(13.9), as opposed to the normal 14.2-14.5..
Switch ? Solenoid ? Altenator ?
Sometimes it does.. There is no predictable patern..
Mine does the same thing. Probably a bad brush or commutator section in the starter where brush doesn't contact; depends on how the starter armature is clocked when the car stops. Turning the key several times finally bumps the starter to a sweet spot where it will start.
