The battery in my father's 2000 C5 was dead. It was only 18 months old. When I hooked up the jumper cables, the (closed) passenger side headlight motor made the dreaded grinding gears sound. It was very loud and intermittent, lasting about two seconds. The car wouldn't start with a jump. I had the battery tested, and the battery would not take a charge. I replaced the battery, and attached the positive cable first. Then as soon as I touched the negative cable to the battery, the passenger side headlight made the grinding sound again. I tightened the cable, and about half way through while tightening the cable the noise stopped.
Chevy dealer checked for parasitic draw, and did not find a problem. I am going to replace the headlight motor gear, but could there be a module or wiring problem causing the headlight motor to self activate while closed, thus draining the battery over time?
It goes up and down, grinding when down, so the gear is wearing out. But I don't understand why the headlight motor activated when we tried jumping, and again when I hooked up the new battery.
