Just purchased a C5 and it has a diff leak. Have not had up on rack yet to see exactly where its at. Have dealer apt this weekend.
Car has 26k, so it has just sit around to much. Dealer is saying we should drop the rear and replace all the seals. $1100 or so.
Is that the going rate for this procedure?
I did see the link on here that describes how to do it, and looks like a lot of work.
Any good mechanics here in the KC area that would be less expensive than dealer?
Mine has leaked for several years. Leak is minimal, I think I added fluid once in the entire time I have owned the car (exclusive of complete fluid change). I will address it when the drive train is dropped to do the clutch.
Most commonly it's going to be one of the axle seals (~$30 for both) especially since it's been sitting. Axle seals are like a 1 or 2 hour job, and doesn't involve dropping the rear. A regular mechanic shouldn't charge you more than $150 to do the axle seals. Heck if you lived near me, I'd do it for a six pack if you brought the seals lol.
This is what I don't like about dealers. The engine leaks a drop of oil, and they tell you you're going to need a full rebuild. I learned to stay away from them a long time ago.
If it is just the axle seals then not to big a deal then. That makes me feel better. I did think about just adding fluid and letting it go for awhile. Will have to check into how to do that. But if its a couple of hundred to replace then i will just have it done.
Thanks for the quick reponses, i really appreciate your input.
