I finally decided to quit fighting first gear and fix it. Here is where I am now. Some of the ball joints need to be replaced and I've never done them so.....help? I'd never done the trans. removal either but had some expert help via some tutorials by Dope and Cajun Dude. Now I'm looking for a shop in the Portland area to do the repair work including possible work on the diff. since I found some trash in the axle seal. I couldn't tell if it was metal but it sure looked like it. Also, are the rear wheel bearings prone to deteriorate? It looks like a major deal to get it out and it looks like it will be a unit replacement, which could be spendy.
What is the prevailing opinion re. replacing synchros personally? If I had a good guide I think I could do it, but I'm a little hesitant.
Here's some pictures after it was stripped down and cleaned up.....lots of oil all over the transaxle. Also I noticed a lot of oil on the engine oil pan.
