I had the new style rubber seal installed on the 5th bow of my 2001 C5. When a small soft rubber piece was later found in the trunk area I began to wonder where it came from. Today I confirmed my thoughts about the use for such a cushion piece.
When I started a thread about wanting a part number for this cushion piece nobody responded. Now I think I can gain your attention with more information.
Upon close examination of C5 roadsters I verified where these cushion pieces are used and I strongly suggest you roadster owners closely examine your cars. These pads are stuck over the two exposed bolt/nuts located near both ends of the rubber 5th bow seal that mates to the tonneau cover. Without these pads the ends of the bolts will certainly wear through the canvas top.
Here is my original thread:
I had the new 5th bow rubber seal installed to avoid paint damage from the top rubbing on the tonneau cover with the top up. Afterwards I noticed a small foam pad was loose in the trunk and I think it is meant to cover the two bolts/nuts that hold the rubber seal to the folding top frame, a pair of bolts/nuts near each end of the rubber seal.
The two layer foam pad is similar in construction to the two pads on the underside of the tonneau cover but of different dimensions:
2 5/8" long 11/16" wide 5/8" thick w/ two cutouts for the bolts/nuts @ 1 1/2"
One side has a heavy protection strip while the soft other side with the cutouts is the sticky side.
I should also mention that I am assuming these foam pads go where I said they belong. I could be wrong and they stick somewhere else.
The GM parts man is unable to locate these pads without a part number so I would appreciate any help you can give me.
My pads are not any longer in place after the seal replacement. Now, will someone please get me the part number for the pads?
Re: C5 convertible top potential damage-Alert! (lotzahp)
The pads are located in an area that cannot be reached by a camera lense. One must grab at the bolt/nut area to feel the pads and by very close observation maybe a small part of the pad can be seen by the eye while leaning over. Those of us with bifocals won't see a thing down there in that dark area.
I am expecting some off color responses to this one.
Re: C5 convertible top potential damage-Alert! (Mean Green 2000)
HI there,
You are looking at an installation kit for the top itself.
The part numbers are NOT available separatly.
If it is part of the #5 bow, the kit is available.
Besttoyou, c4c5 :chevy
Re: C5 convertible top potential damage-Alert! (lotzahp)
a pic would be REALLY helpful here if it's possible
Raise front and rear of top as though you are going to open tonneau cover. Feel inside in area marked in red. There should be a foam rubber block covering the two retaining nuts. You will know if its not there because you will feel the exposed nuts which could make contact with the canvass top causing wear damage. (same on driver's and passanger's sides)

Thanks to both of you for taking the trouble to point this out to the rest of us. It seems that a picture paints a thousand words (perhaps even more in this case) ;)
