I have some surging problems after I installed a Blackwing (without cold air cover). When making a short stop shutting the engine down for a couple of minutes and when start again I get surging, sometimes the engine stalls.
Is this because of all hot air under the hood making the PCM confused?
Would a cold air cover solve this?
Lastly, if I install a cold air cover I assume you cut the radiator shroud?
I can't directly answer all your questions, but I can tell you I have read a couple threads on the Forum that surging occured more frequently when the Blackwing cold air cover was used, some vendors indicate they have stopped carrying the cover because of compliants regarding surging.
I can say for sure that installing the cover requires cutting the shroud and you have a beatiful ride!
I don't have a Blackwing but something a lot less expensive (a K/N conical connected directly to MAF. It was a simple air box replacement (filter came off my F150 cold air!) and seemed to work great. I then thought I would open up the shroud under the filter (a square hole about 6x8 inches) and let more cool air in (I already had Z06 screens to let more air in). As soon as I opened up this hole in the shroud, I had definite surging in the range of 35 to 50 mph. No other bad effects though. I got tired of the surging, so I cut out a plastic plate that covers the original hole that had slots in it that effectively cut the air coming through the hole in the shroud by about 1/2. Surging is now gone. This surging condition is identical to my experience with open element filters in Mustang's, whose idle was confused by the fan wash. I had to either put the filter in the fender well or fashion a metal shield to minimize the fan wash.
yes, you have to cut the shrod for BlackWing Cold Air.
since you do not have cold air now and you have surging you may have unmetered air coming in. double check all your connections to make sure that no air is bypassing the MAF
I do not have any cold air cover and I have not cut any hole in the shroud but I thought it might help to do so but listening to your experiences it might even make things worse.
So what about surging without cold air cover/no cut shroud?
Maybe it's time for the infamous drilling a hole in the throttle blade
