Replace CAM and Still be NCCC Group II?
I would like to replace the cam in my 2002 LS1 engine with something with a bit more power, but I want to still compete in the NCCC Group II class. Is this possible? The rule book states "any camshaft that meets General Motors specifications for lift and duration for class" is allowed in Group II. Does this pretty much limit me to stock or can I get something better? Would the Z06 cam work in an LS1 and give it more power?

Hopefully all you NCCC experts were out racing your cars over the weekend and are now around to lend your opinion. ;)

I don't claim to be an NCCC expert, but I have raced with them for several years.
What I believe the rule is saying ("any camshaft that meets General Motors specifications for lift and duration for class") is that you can run the camshaft "specs" for any camshaft that is used in any production engine that falls in your class. That would limit you to any "Corvette" LS1 or LS6 (Z06). What that says is that the lift must be no more that the factory specs and the duration must meet the factory specs, it does not address the profile of the ramps. In other words you could get a cam that starts it's lift and the proper time, opens the valve quicker but only goes to the factory lift, hold the valve open longer but close the valve at the proper time giving you the correct lift and duration, but allowing more gases to move in and out of the cylinder. Many of the cam grinders, Comp Cams, Lunati for example have done this for the NHRA Stock classes in the past.
I am not framiliar with NHRA rules to know is they still require a stock spec cam.
Hope this helps.
