I've got a 99 hardtop. Why are those plastic panels in the nose, where the Z06 has open mesh, there?
It appears to be just, well, stupid.
I recognize that they can be easily replaced or holed (easier!). I just don't understand the purpose for an OEMer to put them in. I thought aerodynamics perhaps but I am obviously stupefied. I have yet to play serious and I just don't want to do anything amazingly stupid, unless it's fun.
Any direction would be appreciated, and thanks.

Welcome to the Forum. :yesnod: :yesnod: Don't know the official answer to your question, but I suppose that the solid pieces were added insurance to keep water out of the intake. If you want more cool air into your engine compartment and your air filters, then open up the solid plastic or install the Z06 screens with the black plastic things removed. Hope you have a great time here on the Forum. :D :D
Re: Howsa come they installed those solid blanks? (VetWorksRep)
These are technically the "front fascia deflectors", better known as the fog light shrouds. Originally, they were to have air slots at the top - I have a preliminary version of the 1998 shop manual and it shows them with the slots. However, they went into production as a solid piece to reduce the coefficient of drag. For the Z06, the extra horsepower made it worthwhile to open up the area to get cooler air to the intake and not sweat the slight increase in drag.
Re: Howsa come they installed those solid blanks? (silversport)
The CD change because of such a slight lack of venting along the blunt edge and the fabrication of the non-functioning inlets to necessitate the insertion of blanks strikes me as goofy and contrary to good design. Wouldn't the blanks be better at the leading edge instead of being recessed?
Engineering pecularities aside, are there any 'hole fillers' that are functional? Do any improve CD/appearance/lighting/efficiency?
I've got a number of catalogs and inserting non flush components strikes me as inappropriate since the design is supposed to be refined and slippery.
I do want to thank you all for responding.

I'm going to guess (only a guess) that the fascia design was already frozen when they figured out the Cd issue. A flush filler at that location would not look as good as what they actually did, IMHO. Also, the fog light mounting hardware would have to be different.
