this question is more directed to the likes of Evil Twin and company, but why is it that i can't set the cruise in my car to 69mph?

yeah, i know... y'all can go ahead and get all the 'immature military aviator' jokes out of your system now, but i'm serious. it's something i've noticed when cruising down the highway. there are a few other specific speeds i've never been able to set (i can't remember offhand), but this one was the most memorable & also made a more intriguing thread title.

what i'm talking about is that i can be driving at 69mph, but when i set the cruise control, it will either read 68 or 70 on the DIC. using the ACCEL or COAST buttons, if i click up once from 68, it will remain at 68 or go directly to 70, and going down from 70 will show 68, 68, 67, etc.

i've actually randomly seen 69 set 1 time in 3yrs (last week, actually) but never have been able to do it any other time. again, there have been a couple other speeds i've seen it skip - i just can't remember which ones it was.

any insight on this from some of the designers/programmers or anybody else who might know?

I noticed the same thing and thought it very odd.

I figured it was a glitch on my car.

If it was deliberate engineering/programming that would be very amusing.

My car is metric and it does the same type of thing at other speeds. Hitting the accel it can go say 97, 98, 100, 101, 102, 104 etc. But I'll set it next time and it will hit those skipped speeds and skip other speeds instead. Maybe the imperial ones skip mph settings a similar way?

69kph is fairly slow so I don't use the cruise there much so I can't say if it can be set there or not.

Lionel's observations match mine (in mph). I think this is just a matter of the cruise control steps being quantized at something slightly off from 1mph (or 1kph).

^^ that was my next guess... that it's based off maybe VSS voltage or something.
