Default Air Conditioner Problem

Hi All,

A few weeks ago my A/C was not working at all. When pressing the A/C button inside the vehicle, the compressor did not engage (center was not spinning). This lead me to believe it was low on freon. I bought a 12oz can of 134a and proceeded to recharge A/C system. When evacuating the freon into the system the low side pipe did get cold and the compressor started to engage. To my surprise the air blowing is still not nearly as cold as it should be.

Is it normal for the system to take a full 12oz 134a can and still not be cold? Is there any risk of adding a second 12 oz can of freon? PS - There are no codes associated with the A/C system.

Thanks in advance.

Best to use gauges and check pressures when recharging.

Temperature and pressure charts should be available at parts store.

Would you think more than 12oz would be necessary?

Certainly could, you need gauges to tell.

Caution.....the system is rated for only 1.8 pounds of freon, however on occasion one A/C guy said he's used 2 pounds MAX. This info I saw on his computer program when I asked him to check mine.
