This just started happening the other day and I can't figure it out. When I shut off the car and opened the door to get out it kept making the dinging sound, like if I had left my lights on. Everything was off and the keys were out of the ignition and it would not stop dinging. I closed the door and it stopped.
Today I go and open the door to drive the car and it started making the sound right when I open the door. The security light on the dash is flashing, but I'm not sure if that is normal or not. I cycled all the lights and it still dings with the key out.
I'm about to list this car for sale and need to fix whatever is causing this first.
OK this is really a stretch. When this occurs again, while it's happening pop the hood and look to see if the headlights are on. They do light in the down position. If they are on (in the down position) then you found the problem.
One possibility is if the ignition switch thinks the key is in when it isn't. Normally, if the key is left in the ignition when the door is opened the chime will sound so the keys don't get locked inside the car. There is a SPDT switch internal to the ignition switch that controls this. With the door open and the chime on, try inserting the key several times, if the chime goes off then the ignition switch could be bad.
would think your battery would be drained if it is lights. I would make sure the lights in the hatch area are off. Did you by accident turn them on while adjusting the dimmer switch?
