C5 AC compressor bearing bad

C5 AC compressor bearing bad
My 2001 C5 coupe AC compressor is bad.... the bearing makes noise and now the engine dies when I turn on the AC at idle.... is it better to replace the whole pump or can the bearing be replaced?

I would find out if the bearing can be replaced without discharging the system... If you have to evacuated the system anyway, I would go ahead and put in a new compressor just based on the age.

That is part of my problem... I don't know what is needed to replace the bearing,,,, It seems logical that to replace the bearing I would have to pull the unit which would require recharge also..... at which point the unit replacement vs the bearing replacement is the main issue since the AC unit will need recharging anyway.....
