Ok guys, I know there is a sticky on this but i couldn't find what I needed in the first 5 pages so here it is. I am getting the service steering column warning on the dash and the car cuts out at 2 mph. The column isn't locking, I don't think it will lock, as I can move the wheel without the key installed. I am also having an issue where my fuel gauge drops to empty every once in a while. From what I have read on here I think I need to change the battery, but I just wanted to see what everyone else thinks...
Thanks for the help and sorry that I am making another thread about this...
The Column Lock problem (2mph fuel shutoff and error messages) is likely due to a weak or bad battery or loose or corroded battery cables. Your profile says it's a 98. Is it a manual or auto trans? Makes a difference in getting it going right away or waiting to get a CLB or LMC5 to arrive.
Try charging the battery, it might do it. If not post back if it's an auto or manual.
The fuel gauge problem is likely a buildup of oxidation on the sensors in the fuel tank. Get yourself a couple of large (20 Oz.) bottles of Techron Plus. With the tank at under 1/2 full add the entire bottle and fill the tank. There are 2 tanks and you need to disburse the Techron into both tanks. Adding to less than 1/2 tank and filling does that. It may take more than 1 treatment to fully disolve the oxidation but it will correct the problem.
it is an auto and I need to get it going first thing in the morning, its not parked in the best area, so I will replace the battery in the morning and order the lmc5 after...
well it not the battery, i didn't replace it but I had it checked and they said it is just as good a the new ones, soI guess i am going to check the k harness now... if i do have to replace that is that something that chevy would cover or is it going to be out of pocket? thanks
I got the knee plate off, and i couldn't really find the harness and I was too sick at the stomach to continue... I will be towing it to chevy tomorrow....
Thank you for all of your help, I was able to take apart the column and, as I like to call it, **** on the lock motor. That allowed the pin to go back in and get the car running. It is now sitting in my driveway and I am going to order the bypass but I wanted your oppinion on which one to get, LMC5 or CLB? I plan on ordering two of them so I can keep a spare.
Also, I had a check engine light on the drive home, I pulled the code and was wondering if anyone could translate. I did still have the knee plate and the column ripped apart so it might be from that but not sure here are all of the code my car is showing right now:
