Default Second leaky diff fix...

Just got the car back for a leaky diff (driver's side).
Three weeks ago the dealer changed the half shaft seal and
it started leaking a bit more.

Yesterday I stayed most of the day and watched the tech
replace the left side cover and seal. Filled the diff and additive.

But we noted the main diff casting at the seal location was pretty
porous looking. I don't hold out much hope of this being the last
visit for this problem.

I also asked the dealer if they do have to change the diff in the future,
would it be possible to get a 3.15 or 3.42 diff? Would GM allow that
under warranty?

He said "No...Don't want to get involved."

I offered to pay any difference in cost but he wouldn't budge.

Has anyone had success in getting something like this done?

If under warranty, the warranty claim will get kicked back by GM if the part number doesnt coincide with the vehicle,as would be the case if they installed a different ratio (sort of a check and balance type thing if you know what I mean)...In this case, the dealer will eat the repair...You paying them isnt an issue ;)

If you were paying for parts and labor out right, they can install any gear that you please :yesnod:

By the way, unless they add anerobic sealer to the side cover in addition to the new o-ring,it will leak again :yesnod:

C5:

It was worth a try on the diff swap.

Thanks for the seal advice...I'll check with the tech again.
Interesting side note...I asked the dealer if they ever get
battery failures from leaking?

He says, "Hundreds." They're a Chevyy/Pontiac/Buick/Etc. dealer.

"It's only a matter of time. They all leak."

Not reassuring to me however.

Go to Surf Chevy in Pt Pleasent NJ. Ask for Tommy to do the work. He will either fix yours the right way or upgrade to whatever gears you want. It's worth the trip. He fixed my seal last year and it's been fine ever since.
