Default Shifter Box Bushing Replacement

I've read all the input and have decided to replace the bushings to eliminate the rattling. Now here's my "dumb question." Can they be replaced without removing the center console, working through the access following removing of the shift boot? If I am going to have to remove the console, I might as well go for a replacement shifter; is MGW the way to go in that case? Thanks in advance.

How many miles are on your original shifter box?
I'd honestly just replace the whole shift box and have the confidence that a new one is in there. At least that's what i did when i installed my MGW shifter.

At the time the MGW shifter box hadn't came out yet so i used a C6 shifter box. It came with a C6 shifter i did not use and turned into some profit. Hope this helps.

My '04 only has 9200 miles on the clock; but from what I've read, the bushings last 10,000 miles or a couple of years. MGW benefits?

No, the console has to come off, and the shift box has to be removed from the car. I did this job a couple of weeks ago, and I installed the polyurethane bushings. If I remember right, I got them from from Zip Products.

If you go with these bushings, here's a tip...The slots in the shift box aren't machined all that well, so I had to "touch up" the openings with a Dremel tool, to get the poly bushings to seat properly, as they aren't as compliant as the OE rubber parts.

Is there a step by step with pictures regarding the removal of the shift box?

Go to the MGW web site and look at their install videos - good stuff on how to do the whole job including removing the shift box.

Perfect. Thank you. One more question: how do you know whether replacing the stock lower box is necessary? Or is it a matter of if you are replacing the shifter box, to gain all the advantage, change the lower box as well???

Well, my opinion is that if the rubber box mounting bushings are hardened and cracked then those alone should be replaced and the original box put back in. When you buy a C6 shifter you also get a new box and mounting bushings so might as well use it. If you get the new MGW box, then your old original box is replaced by that.

By the way, I helped another forum member and friend recently install the MGW shifter and box in his C5. The quality looked good. Don't forget to align the shifter as per the video and torque the shift rod bolt properly to 22 lb/ft.

If you're putting an MGW shifter in your car, instead of buying new box bushings that are going to fail time after time after time, why don't you order MGW's new lower shift box too that will never fail and makes the shifter smoother?

That all looks VERY nice, as well as VERY$$$. I believe my poly shifter box bushings were about $10-12.
