I currently have a HyperTech 160 degree thermostat in my 97 Corvette. I've heard that with a 160 Tstat the oil in the LS1 motor takes longer to heat up to the necessary level in order to burn off contaminants. Therefore, on shorter drives, the car could be driven with contaminated oil.
I know that the LS1 motor was designed from the factory to run hotter. The OEM Tstat is a 186 I believe. I'm thinking of getting a HyperTech 180 and using my HPP3 to reprogram the fans for that Tstat. I live in the Sacramento California area where it can get cold but never snows or anything. What are everyones thoughts? Thanks.
When the summer is over I am going to change out my 160 and put the OEM stat back in because my trips are fairly short. I need to get the oil temps up. I am also going to set the fans back to stock settings.
Im in southern cali and my tuner saw fit not to even change the stat when we did the H/C swap. A big part of that was wanting to stay emissions compliant as possible. A colder stat can make the car fail. So consider that.
