Hey guys, I have an 01 c5 on 5 spokes & I plan to change the wheels soon. in a few weeks my car will be boosted eitj my a&a v2 kit. My tires now give me wheel hop & def will not hold up to my 550whp, plus I think the wheels are ugly.
I plan to get c5z wheels in the rear 18x10.5. My initial idea is to put on 305/315 drag radials. I can use it at the track, and it would be good on the street with all this power I'd be making & hopefully void that wheel hop.
Concerns:: drag radials get very sticky when warm (and I do my fair shair of burnouts/ sliding, will I be sand blasting my paint by driving long distances or around town with them?!
Other option: put street tires 305/315 in the rear & just throw 275/40/17 Hoosiers on my old 17x9 10 spoke camaro SS wheels
Concerns with above :: too much power to be driving around on street tires, will I broil my tires on a hard hit at 50mph. Also I don't benefit from being able to just drive to track with my normal set of wheels
I only run around on drag radials and no problems with any of the above. I go to bias plys at the track. should have no problem hooking at 50 on mt etstreets.
I run 305 nitto 555r's which are pretty sticky and hook really well for me, Im only at 390 or so so nothing like you but the only time I really hear rock being picked up are in a parking lot after Ive pushed it a little bit. The nittos arent quite a drag radial but with enough heat they do well not sure what they will do at 550 though, just dont plan on doing much driving in the rain.
Buy a set of splash guards from Lewis5 Motorsports or the like. I can now do my burnouts and not get any rubber on my quarter panel. Obviously it helps protects from rocks and sand as you daily drive too.
I recommend forgetting about radials. If you have two sets of wheels, go bias ply all the way for the strip. You can only go as small as 16" wheels on stock spindles which limits you to MT ET streets. Not the full ET drag tires. I use the ET streets though and they are still insanely good at hooking.
I would use MT ET street radial II tires for the road. They will be the 18"/19" friendly tire that will hook better than most any street tire that size. They should last a little longer and be safe on the road. The NT05r and 555r are similar and would be a good road choice as well.
