So today, the A/C compressor in my 03 z06 went out. It was blowing refrigerant all over the engine bay, I thought I had blown a head gasket. Anyway, the local dealership quoted me $1800 dollars for a new compressor and associated parts, they even want to replace the belt and tensioner. Should I let them do it? or find another shop.
New compressor: $300
Accum/orifice/etc: $100
Recharge: $75
$1300 for labor seems like a lot for me. I changed mine out myself. There are a couple of good vette shops around that would probably be cheaper and better. I use the ones in Mooresville, but if you ask in the Southeast Region section, there will be someone who might know of a reputable place closer to you.
If that includes recharging system, then that is a pretty good deal. For an experienced shop, I don't think there is anything special about doing a vette vs doing a Cobalt as long as they have the ac specialist.

Good luck with it.
I think this guy will do okay, he has worked on my truck a/c before, and its ice cold. He owns the shop, actually used to be a GM tech. He seems to think the compressor got too hot. When he put the car in the air, he said the condenser/radiator area was packed full of grass. I live in the country and people throw their grass in the roadway.
