Ok. My dad and I tried to install his new shift **** on the car the other day. And in the process of trying to remove that god forsaken metal bar, we broke one of the sides off. Is there an easire way to do this without having to take it to a dealer? If we end up having to take it to a dealer, do yall have any idea on how much it might cost? Thanks for the help.
Grab the pin with a visegrip (really grab it tight) at about a 90 deg angle. Lay a screwdriver across the top of your old shift **** and push down on the vicegrip to pry the pin up. Its tough, but it will come out! Good Luck!
You can get it off! I did mine on Wednesday night...what a PITA though. If you spray the pin with some good penetrating spray ala Liquid Wrench or PB, then get a good grip with some vice grips it will come off. Don't give up yet. I almost did myself, but I'm glad I didn't. And you'll only have to do this one time, assuming you'll never go back to a stock ****.
I found that the easiest way for me to take out the pin was to take 2 flathead screwdrivers, and place one under each end of the pin, and just press down on the screwdrivers(place a rag or something on the **** if you want to protect it, I was tossing mine so I didn't bother). With all of the leverage the pin practically flew out.
Pry technique is illustrated here: http://www.vetteessentials.com/instr...tructions.html. Go to the second set of instructions, entitled "C5 Custom 6-Speed(MN6) Shift Boot & Shift **** Installation Procedure." Read steps 4 through 6.
I have tried both the prying method and the method of tapping the vice grips with a hammer while they're attached to the pin. The tapping is not to force the vice grips upward, but it's to transfer some shock to the pin while you at the same time pull the pin upward by wiggling the vice grips. I have had a lot of success with this latter approach, although you have to hold tightly to the vice grips so they don't go flying. Good luck. :seeya
