99 Traction Control System Message and Light
I have a 99 convert [58k miles] with a problem with my traction control system;
These are the facts:
I had my local chev garage replace my Harmonic Balancer.
Soon after that i started to get a "Traction control system warming up" message with the "traction light coming on".
Dealer pulled codes and said car needs a EBCM replacement, but i was not convinced after seeing some of the info on this website.
I pulled the codes and got the following:
28 TCS C1283 H
58 SDM U1064 H
AO LDCM B2282 H
B2284 H
U1064 H
A6 SCM B2616 H
H1064 H
BO RFA U1096 H
U1064 H
U1016 H
C2100 H
NO MORE CODES
I saw mention in the 2000 traction control system string about steering wheel position during the reinstallation of the rack and pinion. Not sure about how little or much would cause a problem, but my wheel is only off about 5 degrees to the left. Probably where it was prior to the repair.
Checked it out and my system is definitely not working.
Tomorrow i will zero the codes and take the car for another ride and recheck.
Help me if you can, i need to sell this car and move on to a C6 GS.
Bob
I will go back to the dealer and ask him to align the front wheels.
Not sure i understand how the rack is may be reinstalled with only a slight angle of the steering wheel since the coupling between the rack and the steering column seems to be a hex which should result in a much greater angle [around 30 degrees].
In a small defense of my dealer, he indicated that it was probably the EBCM and would attempt to order a new one. He mentioned that they probably are not available, since he had problems getting one previously and resorted to rebuilt units with not good success.
It is amazing how little these dealers seem to know about these cars. It is also amazing that the manufactures keep making the cars more complex with tons of new and wonderful electronics supplied by the lowest bidder. I guess right now i am happy i will not be one of the first to buy a 2014 vette.
Thanks again for the help.
I took your info and a post from another thread which said to check the volts on the most center light blue wire in the SWPS connector and look for 2.5V. The dealer checked and found that the steering wheel was 360deg off just like the writer in that other post said he found his. All good info. Happily it was not the SWPS.
They are also refunding the 100 i paid for the diagnostic which led him to think that the EBCM was the problem. Imagine how much it could have cost to not solve this problem without your help.
Thank you. Now i can reluctantly sell this car and move on to a GS convertible.
