Squeeking and shuddering! please help! (2002 vert A4 owners please read)
My car is doing this annoying thing where when I first get in it and put it in gear, usually more pronounced in reverse, it squeeks and vibrates for about half a second, and the engine kinda bogs down, also only for a split second. RPM's only drop 50-100 or so. Its a 2002 with 5000 mi., and this problem has gotten slightly worse with time. It only seems to do it when the car is cold and definitely worse with the AC on. To me it definitely sounds like a belt noise. IT is not a loud squeel, it is just an intermittent squeek that corresponds to the shuddering vibration, maybe 10 oscillations. Thanks for your help. :mad
I have (had) the same problem with mine. It has 4500 on it. I took it to the dealer they had it for three days. They replaced the belts. The squeeking is gone but it still shudders. Does not do it all of the time. It never does it in the morning when it is cold. If I go out for lunch (AC on) it will do it in REV.
I have seen it in drive, but not very often. It seems to almost want to stall out. They could not get it to do it at the dealer. I have checked the temp when it does it, and it has done it anywhere from 180- 205 . The car idles at 500 rpms (seems a bit low to me) I told the service tech and they called GM. GM said my car had the newest prom update in the PCM. They wanted to keep the car for awhile and try to get it to act up. Maybe I will take it back but I hate to drive the crappy lender cars. :mad

I think I see a trend! Anymore out there?
Yep, Mine does it too  just every once in a while, it did it once at a stop light and I put it in park and then back in gear and it stopped, I guess I will take it in soon, I REALLY hate to leave it anywhere :(
Re: Squeeking and shuddering! please help! (C5 in 2002)
I refuse to take my car in for such a small random thing :mad They just give you poopie about it, drive it around and dont fix it. It seems that everyone here who has had this problem has been a 2002 A4 convertible, how bizarre, is there really some programming diff between the verts and the coupes? :seeya
Re: Squeeking and shuddering! please help! (TXSTICK)
I think I found what the problem could be. This was supose to be fixed on the 2001 and up. I think that it might still be a problem but only with a
smaller amount of cars. I think we were the unlucky few to ge the bad parts! I have taken my car in two times for this and all they have done is
change the belts. I will show them this and see if it will help. They keep telling me that they have to call the factory since they can not come up with a solution. I told them I thought it was the tensioner, but they kept saying they thought it was the belts.
Q: Service Bulletin: 1997-2000: Intermittent Accessory Drive Rumble During Garage Shift
Corvette Action Center, 2002-05-12 12:13:13
A: Subject: Intermittent Accessory Drive Rumble Noise During Garage Shift and/or During Parking Lot Maneuvers (Install New Generator with Decoupler Pulley and Accessory Drive Tensioner)
Source: Chevrolet Dealer Technical Service Bulletin
Number: 99-06-04-029A
Models: 1997-2000 Chevrolet Corvette with 5.7 L Engine (VIN G -- RPO LS1) and 4L60-E Automatic Transmission (RPO M30)
This bulletin is being revised to update the correction procedure. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-06-04-029 (Section 06 -- Engine).
Condition: Some customers may comment on an intermittent accessory drive rumble noise when performing a garage shift and/or during parking lot maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel to the lock position. This noise may also occur when turning on the air conditioning at idle conditions.
Cause: Engine idle speed may drop below 600 RPM while performing a garage shift, turning the steering wheel to the lock position, or turning on the air conditioning. This noise may be amplified by a large rate of change in engine RPM. This condition can also be aggravated by different low engine RPM driving conditions.
Correction: A new Generator with Decoupler Pulley and reduced damping Accessory Drive Tensioner was implemented for all Corvettes with automatic transmissions at 2001 SOP (Start Of Production). The generator with decoupler pulley is used only on Corvettes equipped with an automatic transmission. The reduced damping accessory drive tensioner is used on all 2001 Corvettes.
The new decoupler pulley generator and tensioner assembly should be used to service 1997-2000 Corvettes with automatic transmissions that exhibit the idle rumble noise. Refer to the Engine Electrical and Mechanical sub-sections of Engine in the Service Manual for generator and tensioner replacement
