Steering Position sensor Install/ active handling not working
The past Friday I had a well know shop change out the SWPS out in my 02 C5. The car had not had this changed out and the active handling was going nuts on occasion with a front wheel lockup at random times. I checked and all over the message boards it says to replace this sensor.. so i had it done. Got the car back after the shop closed due to not getting a ride and the car wont make it ten feet with the system not going into crazy violent stop the car. If i drive straight its OK but any and i mean any change in steering makes the car go crazy..Did i miss something or what else is needed? the part was new and had the pin installed so i know it was new but the car is not able to be driven with the system turned on. Spoke to the shop and they said they followed the procedure to install perfectly and they cant understand why its doing this.
Yes i pulled the codes and it was service active handling. It was over two weeks ago and i cant remember the exact number but that is when i did the whole trip to the dealer to see if the previous owner had replaced the SWPS.
Currently when i drive with the system on it goes balistic then after shutting off and driving normal i have run the code reader and it says no trouble codes..which to me makes no sense.. It clearly flashes up on the screen service active handling..
When my steering sensor was going out, it would do all this with no codes. It took a long while till a code tripped. I think it was something like over a week driving daily.

You need to use the dic to pull the codes. If you get that message you have codes. Sure sounds like a swps. Maybe it was not installed correctly.
I don't completely understand your post. Did you tell the shop what needed to be done or did they come up with that diagnosis and repair? I mean you bring your car in for a repair procedure to a reputable shop and they give it back to you in worst shape than before!
Am I missing something? It's obvious that they have absolutely no clue on how to work on a C5 and screwed up the SWPS installation or worse.

Here is the back story, bought the car a few months back and while driving it did the killer one wheel pulse at 70-80 mph and active handling displayed on the info screen. When i went to the dealer they said there were no open recalls and the steering wheel position sensor had never been changed( did the research to see what this was) So after reading on the forums that they do go bad and a replacement would solve the issue i ordered one and had the shop replace it. Just pulled a code this morning and it was C 1286 H which from reading is a DTC C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction. Not sure why the car has this now vs before but either way once I turn the system ON cant drive the car because the system goes nuts.

IMO either the new swps you bought is bad or they screwed up the install. Was the install done by an experienced shop?
Yes EB3 in Manassas VA. They have worked on a ton of my cars and i have never had an issue with any or there work. I guess my only recourse is to take it to the dealer which i hate to do in order to diagnose the issue.

Have them do it again this time making sure the steering wheel is centered. When mine was done it already had the column lock plate change and the steering wheel was .05 off from center. Got that code after that. The sensor compares to another on at the wheels. If they are off bias of each other it will throw this code and shut down tics and active handling..
Do a search for steering wheel position sensors in the forums for the correct wires, you can check it with a multimeter. Center the wheel and the readings on the left and right should be the same..
