Ever since I got my 01 c5, sometimes when i accelerate i hear a soft rattling noise from under the car. I think it's coming from under the passenger side area and is prob something related to the drivetrain. It is not loud at all but is just annoying, and frustrating since i dont expect a $55,000 car to make rattling noises at all. Anybody have any ideas? Checked the exhaust mounts and everything is secure. Thanks

I have a wierd sound coming from under my car also.Only when I am pushing on the gas though. To me it sounds kinda like a exhaust leak.I havent been able to check it yet.

Hey guys, having the same problem with my 98, an earlier thread mentioned something about tensioner springs near the H pipe. Seems as though one of the springs ( drivers side if I remember correctly ) is loose and will rattle during acceleration. I think they connect to the floorboard and to the pipe itself and act as a tensioner. Seems like the fix was to wire tie the spring to take out some slack. Need to get mine on a lift and check it out. Kind of a pain to listen too! Hope this helps.
Re: Rattling noise from under car when accelerating? (Urcvb2)
I have noticed the same sound as well. This usually, but not always, occurs when I accelerate from a cruising state, while staying in the SAME gear. I was curious, but forgot about it because there seems to be no harm. I like to think of it as the sound of a rattlesnake just before it bites the victim. So, when I hear that rattling sound, I know some poor sap in the next lane is gonna get his butt handed to him soon after. :D
Re: Rattling noise from under car when accelerating? (NassyVette)
Nassy,
my car is an automatic and this rattling sound occurs in all gears pretty much in the lower rpm range when you first accelerate. even happens in neutral so i suspect it might be the vibration of the exhaust. it seems to be coming from the front of the undercarriage but i cannot pinpoint where it's coming from. it's just a real annoying sound, esp. when you are more prone to hearing it now. anyway to make it stop? driving off shouldnt make people think that your exhaust is loose or something under your car is falling off and hanging by a loose screw.
Re: Rattling noise from under car when accelerating? (gaww)
I have the same exact noise and frustration that you all describe. Asked a very knowledgeable mechanic about it today and he said it may be due to the timing chain. I've looked everywhere and I still cannot find the source of the sound. Anyone out there come up with other answers?
Re: Rattling noise from under car when accelerating? (gaww)
If it's not the 'normal' rattle, like a can of marbles, described in the video at around minute 25 or 26, I found mine quit when I took out the H pipe and put in an x-pipe. The factory pipe, even though the exterior looks like about 3 inches, has an internal opening about the size of your pinky. I suspect the noise is similar to detonation but occurs inside the H pipe for some reason.
Re: Rattling noise from under car when accelerating? (gaww)
I HAve the same problem. I spent ab out one hour under the car trying to pinpoint the problem nut i could not find anything  Any help would be greatly appreciated
Re: Rattling noise from under car when accelerating? (gaww)
If this is the "can of marbles noise" it's perfectly normal and it's described in several places one of which is the video that comes with the car. Damn annoying though, isn't it?
It may sound obvious, but there's quite a lot of good stuff both in the owner's manual and the video.
In fact, every so often, someone excitedly shares on here some "secret" (competition mode, for example) that they just read on the forum thats actually in the manual or the video. No kidding.

I was told that it was something call clutch chatter. Basically, it's where when a clutch with a high clamping force, doesn't really have the neccessary rpm's to grip the flexplate (can't think of the part), it kinda rattles. My dad's does the same. Never bothers me. But then again, I can't hear much over that radio. I love that Bose system.
