Default Column lock msg help

02 auto trans. From my readings that I remember this was not suppose to happen with auto trans. I have had some battery issues lately and the car just nearly started this morning and I got the mgs. Is it safe to drive?

I'll start my search for post here and start reading again, but any quick reply appreciated.

Thanks for quick reply and the information. I have been reading and running to get wife's car to go get new battery. I had not read the CLB information in some time, but thought I was immune do to mine being an 02 A4 car.

I checked codes and found B2587 and B2809. Also found codes for LDCM & RDCM. They all cleared but battery is pretty much dead. Off to get new bat now. My list of codes does not list B2809, under BCS. Anyone know this code?

I was also reading that these codes could be a result of LOW battery. If I have fried this CLR relay. Where is it and how hard to replace? How would I know if it is fried? Continued CL mgs? Once new battery is installed and no more mgs, can I assume the CLR has not been fried?

Thanks again for info and some peace of mind. Back in an hour or so.

Thanks again. Just got the battery out and of course, rain just before I started. Poor vette is living outside these last few days, long story. I'll dry off a little before jumping into wife's new car to fetch a new battery. I think I can figure out how to test a relay, but after all the work to get to it, I might just replace anyway. One step at a time, get new battery and see what happens.

Thanks for the detail in your replies. Save your fingers for a while. For me, it's not so much the typing as it is the proof reading and corrections.

Chuck (8VETTE7). Would not a LMC5 be the same price as a relay and actually allow him to remove the relay and also to not worry about the K harness being good or bad?

New battery in and things look good. No CL warning so far. I guess I'll go out for a little drive, get gas and some food. If nothing shows up, I guess I'm done. Thanks 8VETTE7 for the detailed information.

Just to update. Everything is good so far. Battery must have been the problem/fix. Hope this helps someone else that runs into the same problem. Thanks again for help 8VETTE7.

Until we knew if the relay was bad, it really isn't necessary to install an LMC5 in a 2001 - 2004 auto. Worst it would have is error messages in the DIC. Column can't lock because of the small diameter lock plate and the 2mph fuel shutoff isn't programmed because that was a part of the NHTSA and GM Recall fix for manual trans C5's which came out in Jan. 2004 plus 2001 - 2004 C5's are NOT eligible for the recall service.

Anyway, in this case the relay survived and the new battery corrected the error message so nothing further is warranted IMHO.
I think all cars have 2 mph cutoff, my 99 Auto does.

Your 99 doesn't fall between the 2001-2004 A4 cars that the answer is for.
