Re: Cracked 5 spoke rim (vetterdstr)
Don, I am beginning to think that the stock wheels are not very good for what we are doing with our cars. Hopefully, WCC will take care of it for you.
vetterdstr
Crickett, Vetterdstr.
I sure hope the next rim holds up better. To think that the stock rims won't hold up is a scary thought. If I had hit something with it, I could understand the failure, but for it to break under a high load. Wow!
I also heard there was another 2000 that broke a spoke on a rim, and it had not been chromed. No one has posted that info, it's what I got in an email.
Good to hear from the two of you, hope all is well, and the mods are in control.
:)
 My guess would be that the rim couldnt handle the lateral stresses imposed by heavy road racing with sticky tires. Is it also possible that the chroming process weakened them, possibly due to high temps or something?
I knew if I held onto the 'wagon wheels' long enough, they would come back into vogue - I'll now refer to them as 'high-performance racing wheels'! :jester
Don- Glad you found that before the track.. I'm looking forward to joining you guys again at an upcoming track day.. Unfortunately, my new job has me doing quite a bit of travel
I don't remember it it was I that posted the original about the crack in a stock un-plated wheel. I took delivery of my 2000 FRC in Aug of 99. Not long after I noticed a small crack at the base of one spoke where it attaches to the rim. It was about a half inch down the side and across the front. I was never sure if it was in the paint or the metal but the dealer was told to replace it and hold the original wheel. I have not had a problem since and have done some Auto-crossing. I can only guess that it was a fluke. This was on a right rear wheel.
They are OEMs so I reckon they are forged. Read the revised post for an update.
Don,
If it is an early 2000 wheel (through about February, 2000), and either polished or painted, it's a forged wheel. At that time (February, 2000, or so) manufacturing of the painted wheels was turned over to Speedline (stamped on back of wheel) and the painted wheels became castings rather than forgings. The polished wheels remain forged and are manufactured by GM (stamped on back of wheel).
The way to tell a forged vs cast wheel, besides thicker spokes, is the cast spoke flares out where it attaches to the rim.

Re: Cracked 5 spoke rim: Update (vetterdstr)
Hi Guys,
I really appreciate all the offers for assistance and the support. Too bad West Coast Corvettes isn't helping much. Oh, sorry, let me get off my soap box.
It looks like I'll be picking up a set of polished rims from another forum member tomorrow morning and have everything packed up in time for Willow Springs.
No Problem Don... have a fun and safe time out there. Say hello to the gang for me. :) Tell them that I will be at BW in Sept with a whole new attitude, HP, brakes, tires, and possibly some far out Aerodynamic aids too.

An engineer told me that chrome plating tends to weaken the underlying metal by a process called "hydrogen embrittlement". In theory, the problem can be solved by baking the hydrogen out of the metal, if the shop is really good. In practice, I try to avoid chromed parts for anything where strength is important.
