After about a year of owning my 2000 Corvette, I noticed a musky smell coming out of the a/c when I initatly turned it on. No it is not my cologne! :mad I tried that a/c neutralizer spray in hopes to end the problem. It only worked the first couple of times I turned it on. I then thought that maybe I had a water leak in my interior and that it might be adding humidity to my a/c.
Well last week was the last straw when my girlfriends friend said, WOW your a/c smells bad. I took my car to the dealer and they added what they called an after-blower. The mechanic said the Cadillacs had a bad a/c smell problem that they had to address. They started to install a/c after-blowers to eliminate the problem.
An after-blower turns on every couple of hours even if the car is turned off and dehumidifies the coils and a/c unit. The dealer told me that they are installing this on Corvettes to eliminate the a/c smell problems.
I just got it installed and have not had a chance to smell if it works. I will keep you updated. If you have a better solution or are experiencing the same problem let me know.
Re: Smelly A/C... Dealer has new solution (PewterC5)
A cheaper solution is to simply switch off the AC and turn the vent blower on full blast 5 minutes before you arrive somewhere. This drys out the system/coils so they don't sit wet and allow mildew/mold to form. It's a bit of a pain in the ****, but I've gotten into the habit. The air pretty much stays cool for a couple of minutes when doing this - would be nice if the system had some sort of moisture sensor and kicked in the vent blower automatically for 5 min whenever you parked after running the AC on a hot day... perhaps an aftermarket "smart" module could be developed to do this?
Re: Smelly A/C... Dealer has new solution (Nekbyter)
They have had this for awhile now. I will deal with letting the fan run for a few minutes before I park. This takes care of the smell in my car and the dealer does not have to touch it. :D
Re: Smelly A/C... Dealer has new solution (Miamivette)
I had an 89 Buick that had the mildew smell in the A/C and they installed a humidity sensor that would turn on the fan to dry the coils out when humidity was detected, so that GM fix has been around a long time. You could be in the garage at any time and the heater fan would come on, run about 5 min. and shut off. Never had any trouble with the battery. The smell is caused by not having the moisture drain out of the coils as completely as it should.
If you can stand the heat, shutting off the A/C and running the fan hard five or ten minutes before you get home will also do the same job.
