I have a 2000 convertible and was coming home on the expressway. Outside temp about 40 degrees. Engine is normally about 200 deg. Check gage lite went on and eng temp was 260 deg. Revved engine and temp went to normal. 30 seconds later went all the way up. kept doing the revving and then check engine light went on and car started running rough. pulled over and sat 5 minutes. Started up and ran fine at 200 deg for about 3 miles and then temp went all the way up again. Kept stopping every few minutes and was able to get to a chevy dealer. They just called and said it was water pump. $1100.00. Does that sound right to anyone. I found out later that rough running is what they do to get car home by eliminating every other spark to cool the cylinders.
THANKS

The 'revved engine' and 'went to normal' has got me baffled. Do you mean it was overheating and you then revved it? Why? What is normal?
Waterpump on a C5 is one of the easiest fixes on the car;Did mine with hoses ,therm, and radiator in about 2 1/2 hrs check the Sticky section on how to bleed and burp the air out of the system and you will be good to go ....$1,000.00 is a Royal Screwing..Good Luck
do the radiator and hoses while you have it all apart. radiators not only lose cooling efficiency getting crammed with crap, they scale. at 13 years old it's going to go anytime
this is a list of the parts and part numbers in your cooling system
Ac delco 20889 radiator $188.16
Ac delco water pump 251-744 $177.61
Ac delco water pump inlet w/ stat 15-11057 $29.30
Ac delco 18021L hose $27.52
Ac delco 24388L hose $25.35
Ac delco 24458L hose $14.59
GM hose 10229491 $24
Gates 18127 $12.62
Gates 5/8” heater hose {runs small} 2ft section
GM coolant tank 10430189 $69.95
Or you could fix what's wrong. No way is the engine temp going up 60 degrees in 30 seconds. The water pump won't be causing this. It could be bad, but not causing rapid temp pegging like this.
