Hello all. A couple of weeks ago I took the car out to fill it up with gas and put "Stabil" (sp?) in it for the long winter nap. It has been sitting in the garage under cover with the tender on it since then. The last few days I have noticed a pretty persistent gas smell coming from that side of the garage. I have looked under the car a few times and there are no visible leaks or anything and I did not overfill when I filled it up. I will take the cover off, open the hood and maybe even jack it up to inspect a little deeper, but any other ideas?
I had this happen with a c5 once, it was an issue with the evap system. There was a crack in one of the plastic lines. I ended up installing a vent fan on the garage and just running it until I found it lol

I see you have a 2003. Some of the late 2003 had the new fuel system that came out in 2004. Check your rpo codes and see if you have the ffs fuel system if you do post back on here.

Thanks Vertex, sorry, not sure what RPO codes are, but happy to check them once I know where to look. I am still learning this car a bit since I have only had it since May of this year and it's my first C5.
They are production codes, the options your car came with. They are located on the inside of your glove box. Look to see if the letters FFS are listed there.
Glenn, I am headed to Vegas in a little while so will prob be off the forum for a few days but if you do have the new fuel system this should keep you busy for a while http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...or-smells.html
Vertex, looks like I am in a "pickle" with my 2003. My VIN does fall in the range for the FFS (I am at work and can't verify just yet). After reading that thread you sent me, it looks like the 03s were not covered in the GM bulletin. Even if the problems with the FFS are indeed my problem, looks like it will be an out of pocket expense. Looks like I should not be filling the tank all the way anymore until I get this fixed. Oh well, thanks for the info and have fun in Vegas.
Yea, those tanks are like ticking time bombs and Chevy should have recalled and replaced them all instead of just when they break. I just had mine replaced on their nickel and very relieved since my car only had 15k on it I expected it would wait till after warranty to break. I will put up with an oil leak or a rattle but don't feel safe when I smell gas especially in my garage. Bite the bullet and get it checked might be something else. Good luck.
I was getting a fuel smell from my '01 coupe last year. Turned out the fuel filter outlet was leaking...most likely a result of the ethanol content in the gas, as the filter was not the OE part, and only 6 years old, at the time.
I had the same problem with my 2002 convert, I would get a gas odor when I filled the tank more than about 3/4 full. I replaced the fuel filter, which sits just above the exhaust slightly ahead of the rear axle and the odor went away. Get a Wix filter from Rockauto or somewhere rather than a dealer. Bleed the schraeder valve first. You can find instructions here or PM me and I'll send you the links and pics.
Thanks Gene, I wish it were that easy. With the newer fuel system (called FFS) in the later year 03s and 04s the filter is part of the pump which is actually in the tank. I am going to start troubleshooting/searching for the cause tomorrow.

Amazing, isn't it, a fuel line connection, directly over the exhaust pipe!!
That's why it took me a couple of days to find the leak on my car, the fuel was evaporating on the hot pipe, before it the ground.
Since buying the car 7 months ago I have experienced fuel problems. They have run the gambit of everything you can imagine. It started out with the engine light coming on and experiencing a gaseous odor. First I tried having the fuel cap replaced, then having the fuel pumps replaced, used Techron additive, and finally after having nothing fix it I took it to the dealer who found a hole on the top of the right side fuel tank. I am hoping that this will fix the problem once and for all! Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Interesting..............the right side tank on my '01 just started dripping.
