Default Adding mufflers to str8 pipes?

Hey everyone,
I bought an '01 Z06 a few months ago from a dealership. I know im gonna take some heat for "complaining", but oh well haha. I'm not sure what kind of exhaust it has as I haven't lifted it up to check yet, but I've glanced uner the car and it is definitely str8 pipes. Is there any way to add mufflers to what's there already without replacing the entire system? I like it loud but it's my DD so I just want a little more tame. Any suggestions??

You bought the car from a dealership and they sold it to you without mufflers.? A dealership is responsible to deliver a car to you that is compliant with DOT regulations, its against the law for a dealership to sell a non compliant car. They could loose their license to sell cars. If you live in a State where a State inspection is required it also breaks the State law, and their State inspection license could be revoked or a least a fine. I would go back to the guy you bought it from and have them install mufflers. IN states where a State inspection is required , its usually the State police who monitor State inspection stations and regulate and enforce compliance with State inspection laws.

Really?!? I did not know that. I'm in louisiana and they don't do emissions checks, but I bought it in Dallas. But, if they are responsible I definitely want them to fix it. I will contact them. But just asking, what would my options be if I wanted to add something.

They are suppose to do a safety inspection on the car before selling it. Mufflers are required. because the received it in this manner does not remove their liability to sell it as a legal vehicle. If the horn didn't work they would have to fix it before selling it. if the emergency brake didnt work they would have t fix it. If you walked up to them and demanded they put on mufflers , they would probably laugh in your face. they would say they sold the car to you in perfect shap with mufflers intact. In two months the new owner must have removed them. Rather than asking here about adding mufflers to the straight pipes you have, your option is go to a muffler shop and ask them what it will cost to add mufflers. they can do it. its a simple feat for them. Not seeing what you have would only be speculation for anyone here. mufflers could cost 50/100 dollars each plus labor. you could get something effective on there for 300 to 500 dollars as oppose to a new exhaust system which will cost you 700 to 1200 dollars. Good Luck.. BTW chances of getting the dealer to foot the bill would be a waste of time unless you were in a State inspection state and you brought along a State trooper with you.

Thanks for the reply. I paid to have the car inspected at a dealership out there and missing cats and mufflers were not listed. I thought they would find and note something like that. That's why I took their word for it when they said it was a catback system. Ill check and make sure before doing anything, but I so agree that I'm out of luck with going after the dealer. I might as well just get it done and go about my business.

If you were as ornery as me. I would go back and get in their face about the deception of the catback system ... a cat back systems has pipes and mufflers after the existing cats You are right in not perusing this.. take it as a learning experience and never trust a car salesman. Stay as far away from dealerships as possible.

Texas is a state inspection state, and Dallas County has emission checks as well. Evil Twin is right

Texas inspection does not require mufflers. I've had a car inspected here (in a county that requires emissions) without mufflers and that wasn't an issue as long as it passed the emissions test. I'm not sure if they have to follow federal standards, but the car does meet texas standards.

To answer your original question, most exhaust systems sold for the C5 is just an "axle back" system, meaning that they only replace the pipes that are past the rear axle, which is really just the muffler and tips.

If your system has straight pipes, it should look something like this:

There's also a handful of exhaust systems that have very small "passthrough" mufflers, which you might not immediately see if you just peek under the car. They look something like this:

A new axle back system typically costs somewhere between $700 and $1200. If you look on the for sale forum, you might be able to find one cheaper.

Here's a comparison put together by Mid America Motorworks. It doesn't include all the systems out there, but it has most of the popular ones.

I have the second one. The pass thru mufflers. Like i said before I really didn't get a great look under the car yet, but I know that's what I have. It looks exactly the same. I still want to quiet it down being a DD. I guess I'm looking for some quieter catback exhaust. Thanks!!

Texas does in fact require mufflers. However, most shops aren't going to harass you about it as they generally don't do visual inspections, thus why you passed. P.S. I have electric cut outs so I should fail according to section (b)

Legal Research Home > Texas Laws > Transportation Code > Texas Transportation Code - Section 547.604. Muffler Required

§ 547.604. MUFFLER REQUIRED. (a) A motor vehicle shall
be equipped with a muffler in good working condition that
continually operates to prevent excessive or unusual noise.
(b) A person may not use a muffler cutout, bypass, or
similar device on a motor vehicle.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the information. A state inspector told me mufflers weren't required, and he even recommended that I use electric cutouts instead of straight pipes

It looks like the "inspection list" is not very clear on this, and I suppose most inspectors don't read the fine print in the actual required equipment.

In any case, its not enforced. I know a lot of guys with diesel trucks and no muffler that pass inspection. But thanks for letting me know in case an officer decides to throw the book at me.

BTW, that's the "Billy Boat Bullet" exhaust system. Its one of the loudest exhaust systems made for the C5. I think it sounds awesome, but yeah the drone on the highway is pretty unbearable.
