not required but keeps gunk out of the motor that blows past the PCV system. 2001+ cars have a better PCV system but still gets a little oil/gunk in the intake..

your intake probably has some oil build up in it.. normal.. most guys who add the ketch can also remove the intake manifold and clean it up.. you wont notice much if any difference in power/throttle responce. if it were a issue the car makers would put them on from the factory. Some cars it helps clean up smoking under hard accel, IF you get smoking on hard Accel. I would atleast give the throttle body a good cleaning, clean the MAF with some MAF cleaner and replace the plugs and wires. you will get more out of that then anything. I like the GMPP wires (GM PERFORMANCE PARTS) and OEM Irridium (Delco or NGK) plugs. (dont forget the anti-sieze on the threads of the plugs as well as the plug boot grease). my plugs where done in about 15 min. the original wires will most likely break when they come off. you can get plug wire plires to make it easier, i used a needle nose and pulled on the metal heat boot as well as pulled with my other hand on the boots. keep the metal plug boots and reuse them so try not to mangle them up too bad.
