On my 2000 Vette I don't have the tire air pressure sensors in my new wheels... After the first 50 miles everytime I start the engine the DIC reads 'tire monitor system'. I just hit 'reset' and it goes off.. All the guages work. No problems, just a small hassle.
Each pressure sensor is a miniature transmitter. They're actually really trick.
As the car is rolling they even recharge themselves. Each sensor simply
samples the pressure in the tire and broadcasts the pressure. The computer
picks up the transmission, decodes the pressure and displays it in real time.
Since each transmitter uses a slightly different frequency, you have to "train"
the computer to listen for each one.
When one sensor doesn't work, the computer tells you which one. But if the
computer gets no readings from any of them, it assumes something is wrong
with the entire pressure monitoring system, and logs that code.
I also have wheels with no sensors. You just learn to press "reset" a lot. :)
